Admitedly, most of my dreams are, shall we say, boring and bland and repetitive. Dreams of schools I used to attend, jobs I used to have, people I used to know, family/friends/pets where not much really happens. Oh, of course I can usually fly, have super-strength or exceptional powers of telekinesis in my slumbering moments, but at least 70% of the time it's just average and insignificant run-of-the-mill recycled garbage from my subconscious mind that has no real meaning or message (that I can decipher).

But that other 30%? That other 30% is something entirely different! These events are often times more real than the waking world, and might very well be considered OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCES, ASTRAL TRAVEL, and intense LUCIDITY where I have complete control over the landscape and what transpires next. These types of "dreams" began occurring around the age of 15 years old and have popped their heads up at least once per month over the past 15 years. Let's just say my amygdala has been clicked forward and backwards so many times (in some cases brighter and louder than the Fourth of July) that I'm surprised my head didn't crack open and all my rainbow thoughts spill out into reality's ether.

Perhaps some of the strangest occurrences which transpire in my sleep state happen in those moments of Lucid Dreaming where I'm actually seeking out other dreamers; asking everyone I come in contact with "Are you dreaming? Are we real people in the real world meeting in the dream realm?". So far, everyone I've asked looks at me with puzzled expressions on their faces, as if they don't understand my question: though there was one time a year or so back when a middle aged black woman DID indeed reply that she too was dreaming, and that we had to save the world from a powerful monster (like the 'Terrible Nothing') which was going to devour the entire hemisphere of dreams unless we gathered everyone together and "woke them up" in their sleep. Haven't encountered her since but something tells me we'll meet again. I have the misfortune of meeting up with lot of "entities" during sleep as well, and most of them seem rather... malignant and violent. In centuries past I'm sure these would have been described as "demonic forces".

Anyway, didn't intend to use this blog post today as a summary of dreams and their meanings, but just to state that I'll be using this DREAM JOURNAL application as just that. A journal of those 30% of my personal dreams that are actually above-and-beyond the mundane and tedious subconscious rumblings of normalcy which most people experience when they go to bed. Might prove to be an interesting experiment and help keep track of things a little better so I can make some sense of all this. And while I'm completely open to something "supernatural" or "paranormal" at work here, my first inclination is to look at this on the psychological level and ask the most rational questions instead of jumping to conclusions. As Scrooge says in the classic "A Christmas Carol": "...You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato. There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!"

Three final things:

1) YES I dream in color (very vivid color actually, borderline psychedelic).

2) I commonly have dreams of UFO's, abduction/attack, and needless to say it's "trippy" and kinda scary.

3) I'm a night owl, so 9 times out of 10 I'm a day sleeper.

As a guy who owns the definitive collection of classic 'Twilight Zone' episodes (which took me several years to accumulate), I know that there undoubtedly has to be more than one which deals in the topic of sleep, dreams, and nightmares. However, this is the first episode which sprang to mind, 'THE MIDNIGHT SUN', which is quite possibly one of the very best examples of how Serling's work is just as powerful and timely today as it was 40+ years ago. As with most episodes of THE ZONE, simply exceptional storytelling.

Mitsurugi posts: CONTACT FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION

"I say dimension cause I don't know any way else to describe it.

"Anyway, last night I was lucid dreaming and I decided to ask the people in my dream questions. Being conscious of your dream and trying not to wake up is like a balancing act. I asked them personal questions and they answered all of them. It seemed like they knew what I was gonna ask before I said anything. When I had my schizophrenic breakdown, the evil voices knew all of my memories and pointed some out to me. I think when people in this reality visit another dimension through their minds, the people who are native to that dimension can access all of your memories."

Ha, I've seen this movie at least a dozen times over the years (Carpenter's classic 'THEY LIVE'), but after re-watching again last lazy Sunday, I noticed that in the scene where Piper puts on the glasses for the first time and visits the book stand, he's prominently standing next to the book "Edgar Cayce on ESP".

What?! Nothing from the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' series? Just watched 'New Nightmare' again the other day, so here's a clip.

Anyway, here's a list of 5 of the Top Dream Sequences in Film.

Wizard of Oz? Hello?

And one of my own musical tracks just for good measure, dealing in sleep/dreams...

...Though I could never hope to outshine the artists above.
